Jindaiji Temple

Japanese: 深大寺 - じんだいじ

This is a Tendai Buddhist temple located in Jindaiji Motomachi, Chofu City, Tokyo. During the Nara period, it was founded by the monk Manko as a Hosso Buddhist temple, and became a Tendai Buddhist temple in the early Heian period. The principal image, a gilt bronze seated Shaka Nyorai statue, is a masterpiece from the Hakuho period. The Daruma Market in front of the temple and the area around Jindaiji are also famous. The adjacent Jindai Botanical Garden covers an area of approximately 260,000 ^m2 and contains approximately 100,000 plants of 3,000 species, making it a popular tourist destination on the outskirts of Tokyo.

東京都調布市深大寺元町にある天台宗の寺。奈良時代に満功上人が法相宗の寺として開創し，平安初期に天台宗になる。本尊の金銅釈迦如来倚像(いぞう)は白鳳(はくほう)時代の傑作。門前のだるま市と深大寺そばも有名。隣接する都立神代(じんだい)植物公園は広さ約26万m²で，約3000種，10万本の植物を有し，東京郊外の行楽地になっている。
