...A Joruri tayu from the early modern period. He first studied under Ito Dewa-no-jo and Okamoto Fumiya in Osaka and took the name Kakudayu. He eventually created his own unique style of Kakudayu-bushi and founded a troupe in Kyoto around 1675 (Enpo 3). In 1677 he received the title of Sagami-no-jo, and in 1685 he changed his name to Tosa-no-jo and became a central figure in the Kyoto Joruri world alongside Uji Kaga-no-jo. He specialized in sekkyo-style (sekkyo joruri) plays, and created the Ureibushi style that emphasized pathos, while entertaining audiences with performances that made extensive use of Karakuri and other devices. *Some of the terminology explanations that refer to "Kadotayu" are listed below.
