1882‐1947 U.S. Congressman and Mayor of New York. As the Norris-La Guardia Act, named after him, shows his status as a progressive politician. During his time as mayor (1934-45), he promoted city beautification through the expansion of parks and the elimination of slums, while also working to expand schools, roads, and airports. He also came into sharp opposition to Tammany Hall, a political organization based in New York, and made it a policy to eradicate boss politics.
