Shinran's characteristic thoughts on Nembutsu. This thought is mentioned in the Tannisho, where it says, "Even good people can attain rebirth in the Pure Land, how much more so can bad people?" The original vow of Amida Buddha is that it is bad people who can attain rebirth in the Pure Land through the power of the original vow, rather than good people. This thought can be seen in Honen, Shinran's teacher. Honen's Chosen Hongan Nembutsu Shu already quotes a passage from Genkyo's Yushin Anrakudo, "The purpose of the Pure Land sect is originally for ordinary people, but also for saints." In other words, Pure Land Buddhism considers ordinary people to be the right opportunity. Furthermore, the Honen Shonin Denki (also known as the Daigo version) records that Honen had an oral tradition that said, "First, even good people can attain rebirth in the Pure Land, how much more so can bad people?" This oral tradition is the same as the words in the Tannisho mentioned above. This idea can be found in the Nirvana Sutra. In Buddhism, those who have committed the five cardinal sins, those who have slandered the True Dharma (Buddhism), and those who do not believe in the Buddhist teachings (sendai) are generally excluded from salvation as they are believed to be unable to attain Buddhahood. However, the Nirvana Sutra teaches that the Buddha's mercy is bestowed upon these most evil of evil people.

念仏に関する親鸞の特徴的思想。『歎異鈔』に「善人なほもて往生をとぐ，いはんや悪人をや」とあり，この思想が言及されている。阿弥陀仏の本願は，善人よりは，悪人こそ本願力によって往生しうるのだとする考え方。この思想は，親鸞の師である法然のなかにみることができる。すでに法然の『選択本願念仏集』に，元暁の『遊心安楽道』から，「浄土宗の意，本 (もと) ，凡夫の為にして，兼ねて聖人の為なりと」という文を引用している。すなわち，浄土教は，凡夫を正機とする，とするのである。さらに，『法然上人伝記』 (醍醐本ともいう) に，「一，善人尚以て往生す，況や悪人をや事」という口伝が法然にあったと記している。この口伝は，上記の『歎異鈔』の言葉と同じである。この思想は経典では，『涅槃経』に見出すことができる。仏教では，一般に五逆罪を犯した者，正法 (仏教) を誹謗した者，仏法を信じない者 (闡提〈せんだい〉) は成仏できない，と救済の対象から除外されていた。それが『涅槃経』では，こうした悪人中の悪人にこそ，仏の慈悲がひとえに重く注がれる，と説かれている。
