Pygmaioi (English spelling)

Japanese: ピュグマイオイ(英語表記)Pygmaioi
Pygmaioi (English spelling)
In Greek legend, they were a race of dwarf people who were thought to live in Africa or India. Their name means "one pygme (length from elbow to fist, about 35cm) tall," and became the origin of the English word pygmy. They were famous for fighting deadly battles with cranes or storks that flew in from the north to spend the winter, and in many vase paintings depicting their behavior, they are depicted as men with hideous faces and large penises. ギリシア伝説で,アフリカやインドに住むと想像された矮人族。その名は〈1ピュグメpygmē(肘から拳までの長さ,約35cm)の背丈の者〉の意とされ,英語のピグミーなどの語源となった。彼らは越冬のために北方から飛来するツル,またはコウノトリと死闘をくりひろげることで名高く,そのありさまを描いた多くの壺絵では,醜悪な顔と大きな男根の持主として表現されている。【水谷 智洋】
