In Greek legend, they were a race of dwarf people who were thought to live in Africa or India. Their name means "one pygme (length from elbow to fist, about 35cm) tall," and became the origin of the English word pygmy. They were famous for fighting deadly battles with cranes or storks that flew in from the north to spend the winter, and in many vase paintings depicting their behavior, they are depicted as men with hideous faces and large penises.
