Mating system

Japanese: 配偶型 - はいぐうがた（英語表記）mating system

Sexually reproducing animals must encounter a mate at some point in their lives and engage in sexual relations in order to produce offspring. The type of pair relationship that occurs between a male and female is called a mating type (corresponding to the marriage system in humans). Mating types can be classified according to whether the pair relationship is between one male and one female, multiple males, or no specific pair relationship exists at all, and can be divided into four types: monogamy, polygamy, polyandry, and promiscuity.

有性生殖をする動物は，その生涯においていつかは異性とめぐり合い，子孫を残すための営みを行わなければならない。そのとき雄･雌間に結ばれるつがい関係のあり方を配偶型(人間における婚姻制度に対応するもの)という。つがい関係が雄･雌1個体どうしの間で結ばれるか，複数のものと結ばれるか，あるいは特定のつがい関係が存在しないかで配偶型を類別し，それぞれ一夫一妻制，一夫多妻制，一妻多夫制，乱婚制の四つに分類することができる。
