Banda Aceh (English spelling)

Banda Aceh (English spelling)
The capital of the Aceh Special Region, located at the northern tip of Sumatra, Indonesia. It is located at the mouth of the Aceh River and has a population of 143,000 (1990). There is a theory that the predecessor of this town was a small port city called Ramli or Rambri, which is thought to have existed in the vicinity and is called Lanwuli or Nanli in Chinese books, but there is no definite proof. The name Banda Aceh has been known as the royal capital of the Aceh Kingdom since the 16th century, but it is commonly called Kuta Raja (royal capital). As the kingdom adopted a policy of limiting trade of pepper, which was abundantly produced within its territory, to this town, it flourished as one of the world's leading pepper trading centers in the 16th and 17th centuries.
