A terrestrial animal belonging to the family Tubificidae of the class Oligochaeta of Annelida. It is also called Gotouitomizu. It is a long, thin red earthworm with a body length of 4 cm and a width of 1 mm. Like Tubificidae, it grows in colonies in the mud of sewers and gutters, but this species is easily distinguished from Tubificidae because it is covered in mud. It is found throughout Japan, and when touched, it turns into small spiral lumps. It is also called akako, peach nightshade, or botsuta, and is used as food for goldfish and tropical fish, but it often contains worms and gill worms that live in the same environment. It sometimes appears in nursery beds, damaging newly sprouted rice grains and hindering their growth.
