Yurimizu - Yurimizu

A terrestrial animal belonging to the family Tubificidae of the class Oligochaeta of Annelida. It is also called Gotouitomizu. It is a long, thin red earthworm with a body length of 4 cm and a width of 1 mm. Like Tubificidae, it grows in colonies in the mud of sewers and gutters, but this species is easily distinguished from Tubificidae because it is covered in mud.

It is found throughout Japan, and when touched, it turns into small spiral lumps. It is also called akako, peach nightshade, or botsuta, and is used as food for goldfish and tropical fish, but it often contains worms and gill worms that live in the same environment. It sometimes appears in nursery beds, damaging newly sprouted rice grains and hindering their growth.

環形動物貧毛綱イトミミズ科に属する陸生動物。ゴトウイトミミズともいう。体長4センチメートル、太さ1ミリメートルの紅色の細長いミミズ。イトミミズと同様に、下水、側溝などの泥の中に群生して揺れているが、本種は泥がついているので、イトミミズと容易に区別できる。

　日本全土に分布し、触れると螺旋(らせん)状に小さな塊となる。アカコ、モモホオズキ、ボツタなどともよばれ、金魚や熱帯魚の餌(えさ)として利用されるが、これには同じ環境に混生するイトミミズやエラミミズも混じっていることが多い。ときに、苗代に発生し、発芽したばかりの籾(もみ)を傷つけ、生育を妨げることがある。
