A collection of poems. 1 volume. Published in August 1882. The correct title is "Shintai Shisho, Shohen". However, volumes 2 and below have never been published. Co-edited by Shoichi Toyama, Ryokichi Yatabe, and Tetsujiro Inoue, it consists of 14 translated poems and 5 original poems. It was intended to improve traditional Japanese poetry, which was mainly tanka and haiku, and to create a new style of poetry (→ Shintai shi) modeled on "Western poetry". Some of the most famous poems are "A Section in Mr. Shakespeare's Hamlet", "Mr. Gray's Thoughts on the Tomb", and "The Song of the Batto-Brigade", but the works themselves are lacking in artistic merit and are merely intended to introduce a new style of poetry. It was republished in 1884 as "Shintai Shisho". Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
