Clot retraction test

When normal blood leaves a blood vessel, it solidifies and forms a clot, which is called a blood clot. The clot gradually shrinks over time, and serum is separated from it. This phenomenon is called clot contraction, and is believed to occur due to the contraction of the pseudopod-like processes of platelets attached to the fibrin fibers in the clot. Therefore, when the number of platelets is reduced, or when the number is normal but their function is impaired (such as in thrombasthenia), or in the case of severe hypofibrinogenemia, the clot contractile force is reduced and serum is not easily separated.

正常な血液は血管の外へ出ると固まって凝血塊となるが，これは血餅（けつぺい）blood‐clotと呼ばれる。血餅は時間とともに漸次収縮していき，血清が分離される。この現象が血餅収縮で，凝血塊中のフィブリン繊維に付着した血小板の偽足様突起が収縮するためにおこるとされている。したがって，血小板の数が減少している場合や，数は正常でもその機能が低下している場合(血小板無力症など)，また著しい低フィブリノーゲン血症の場合，血餅収縮力が減退し，血清は分離されにくい。
