British spy novelist. Along with Somerset Maugham and Graham Greene, he is known as a pioneer of modern spy novels. After graduating from the University of London, he worked in advertising. In 1936, he published his first novel, Dark Border, which attracted attention as a highly literary spy novel. He solidified his reputation with his subsequent novels, Epitaph of a Spy (1938) and The Coffin of Demetrios (1939). His novels, The Way of Arms (1959) and The Levantine (1972), won the Golden Dagger Award from the Mystery Writers of America, and his novel, High Noon (1962), won the Mystery Writers of America Best Novel Award and was made into a film, Topkapi. Ambler himself has written several screenplays. Other works he produced include The Intercom Conspiracy (1969), No More Roses (1977), and The Story So Far (1993). In collaboration with Charles Rodda, he published several suspense novels under the name Eliot Reed, including Mutiny (1953).
