Jobim - Antonio Carlos Jobim

Brazilian composer, arranger, and pianist. He produced many famous bossa nova songs with lyricists Vinicius de Moraes (1913-1980), Aloysio de Oliveira (1914-1995), and Newton Mendonça (1927-1960). Some of his best-known songs by lyricist are: "Triste," "Airplane Samba," "Wave," "Waters of May," and "Corcovado" (all written by him), "The Girl from Ipanema," "Delicious Water," and "Chega de Saudade (No More Blues)" (all by Moraes), "Zinji" (by Oliveira), and "Desafinado" (by Mendonça).

Jobim was born in the city of Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro, and moved to Ipanema with his family when he was one year old. He discovered the piano as a teenager and studied under Hans-Joachim Köllreutter (1915-2005), a German pianist who had immigrated to Brazil. Köllreutter graduated from the Berlin State Academy of Music, and in Brazil was the leader of a group called Musica Viva, which organized concerts of European contemporary music. He introduced Arnold Schoenberg's twelve-tone music and had a major influence on Brazilian avant-garde music at the time. He taught Jobim much of his knowledge of harmony and composition.

However, Jobim's interest was directed towards the works of Brazilian composer Heitor Villa Lobos, who was influenced by Baroque music and various Brazilian folk music. After that, Jobim briefly went into architecture as a profession, but soon returned to music. Around 1950, he started performing in nightclubs, and in 1952, he got a job at Continental Records transcribing music for composers who could not write music. In 1953, he became artistic director at Odeon Records. It was around this time that he started composing music with Mendonça. In 1954, he began working as an arranger with Dick Farney (1921-1987), a male singer with a vocal style similar to Frank Sinatra, Eliseth Cardoso, a female samba and samba canção (canção means song, a samba full of emotion), composer Billy Blanco (1924-2011), and guitarist Luis Bonfa (1922-2001). In 1956, he met De Morais, and as a result of his interactions and explorations with other musicians up to that point, his path to bossa nova accelerated. In 1958, he began recording with João Gilberto, and in 1962, he expanded his activities, performing in the United States, and spread bossa nova around the world.

From a young age, Jobim wavered between twelve-tone music, Brazilian rhythms such as choro and samba, modern Western music such as Debussy and Ravel, and African rhythms. He said that he thought about music in opposition to the establishment and normal harmony. He also aimed to revitalize samba canção, and continued to admire not only Villa-Lobos but also the more popular Donga (1889-1974) and Ary Barroso (1903-1963), who preceded him in Brazilian music. It was a miracle that such a variety of music could be shaped, and without Jobim, the sounds that resonated in the world since the second half of the 20th century may have been very different.

　ジョビンは、リオ・デ・ジャネイロのチジュカという街に生まれ、1歳のときに家族とともにイパネマに引っ越す。10代でピアノと出会い、ブラジルに移住してきたドイツ人ピアニスト、ハンス・ヨアヒム・ケールロイターHans-Joachim Köllreutter（1915―2005）に師事する。ケールロイターはベルリン州立音楽アカデミー出身で、ブラジルではムジカ・ビバというヨーロッパ現代音楽のコンサートを主催するグループのリーダーでもあり、アルノルト・シェーンベルクの十二音音楽などを紹介し、当時のブラジルのアバンギャルド音楽に大きな影響を与えた人物だった。ジョビンは、ハーモニーや作曲などの知識の多くを彼から与えられた。

　しかし、ジョビンの関心は、バロック音楽とブラジルのさまざまな民族音楽に影響を受けたブラジルの作曲家エイトル・ビラ・ロボスの作品に向かっていた。その後、一時、ジョビンは職業として建築関係に進むが、すぐに音楽家に戻る。1950年ごろからナイトクラブでの演奏を開始、1952年からはコンチネンタル・レコードで、楽譜が書けない作曲家の採譜の仕事を得る。1953年にはオデオン・レコードで芸術監督の職につく。このころよりメンドンサとともに曲を作りはじめた。1954年にはアレンジャーとして、フランク・シナトラにボーカル・スタイルが似た男性歌手ディック・ファーニーDick Farney（1921―1987）、サンバ、サンバ・カンソン（カンソンは歌の意味で、情感があふれるサンバ）の大物女性歌手エリゼッチ・カルドーゾ、作曲家ビリー・ブランコBilly Blanco（1924―2011）、ギタリストのルイス・ボンファLuis Bonfa（1922―2001）らと仕事をする。1956年にはジ・モライスに出会い、それまでのほかのミュージシャンとの交流や模索の結果としてボサ・ノバへの歩みが一気に加速していく。1958年からはジョアン・ジルベルトとの録音を開始、1962年以降アメリカ合衆国で演奏するなど活動の場を広げ、ボサ・ノバを世界に広めた。

　ジョビンは若いころより十二音音楽とショーロやサンバなどのブラジルのリズム、ドビュッシーやラベルなどの近代的西洋音楽とアフリカ系リズムのあいだで揺れてきた。体制的なものや通常のハーモニーに抗するように音楽を思考してきたとも述べている。またサンバ・カンソンの再活性化を目ざし、ビラ・ロボスだけではなく、より大衆的なドンガDonga（1889―1974）、アリ・バローゾAry Barroso（1903―1963）といった先行するブラジルの作曲家たちへの憧憬の念をもち続けてもいた。こうしたさまざまな音楽をかたちにすることができたのは奇跡であり、ジョビンがいなければ、20世紀後半以降の世界に響く音は大きく異なっていたかもしれない。
