Sunday School - Church School

Japanese: 教会学校 - きょうかいがっこう

In the West, schools run by churches, such as parish schools and cathedral schools, developed from the Middle Ages onwards, and these schools were collectively called church schools. In Japan, the term was formerly called Sunday schools, as it only referred to educational activities conducted by Christian churches on Sundays and other days for infants and children. This activity originated in 1780 in Gloucester, England, when Robert Raikes (1735-1811) personally provided religious and moral education to poor children. It was later adopted and spread by Christian churches.

西洋では，中世以降に教区学校や司教座聖堂学校など，教会の運営する学校が発達し，これらの学校を総称して教会学校といった。日本では，キリスト教会が日曜日などに幼児や児童を集めて行う教育活動のみを意味したため，かつては日曜学校とよばれた。この活動は，1780年，英国のグロスターでレークスRobert Raikes〔1735-1811〕が個人的に貧児に宗教道徳教育を施したのが起源。後にキリスト教会が採用して普及。
