Stephanus, Robertus

Stephanus, Robertus
Born: 1503, Paris, France
[Died] September 7, 1559. Geneva, Switzerland. French: Robert I Estienne. He is especially known for printing the Greek text of the New Testament. He published the Greek New Testament mainly based on the fifth edition of the New Testament by Desiderius Erasmus (1535), and also referred to the Polyglot (1514-17) by Jimenez de Cisneros of the University of Alcalá (→ Alcalá de Henares). In 1550, he published the third edition, called the editio regina, which was the first to include variant texts, and became the basis for the Textus Receptus, the officially recognized text in England. Stephen, who was also a brilliant classical scholar, was criticized by the Theology Department of the University of Paris for publishing a critical commentary on the Vulgate, and fled to Geneva, where he converted to Calvinism. In 1551 he published two more small volumes of the New Testament, with the chapter divisions that he reportedly made during a horse journey from Paris to Lyon and that are still in use today.
