A gown-like outer garment worn by men and women in Western Europe from the late 14th century to the early 15th century. It has large, flared sleeves and a funnel-shaped stand-up collar. It was generally made from luxurious fabrics such as brocade or velvet, and was decorated with fur and embroidery. The sleeves were decorated with sawtooth or petal-shaped trim. Women of high status wore it with long hems, and later it became a high-waisted robe, often with a wide belt. [Inoue Yasuo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
