Champasak Kingdom

Champasak Kingdom
A kingdom centered in southern Laos. 1713-1947. As its name suggests, Champassak in southern Laos is believed to have been the territory of the Cham nation of Champa in ancient times. Around the 5th century, the Khmer tribe Zhenla conquered the Cham-inhabited region of Champasak, and used it as a base to advance into the Cambodian plains south of the Mekong River. There are many Khmer ruins from the 6th and 7th centuries near the ancient temple of Wat Phu in Champasak. In 1690, shortly before the Lao kingdom of Lan Xang split into two kingdoms, Luang Prabang and Vientiane (1707), a usurpation incident occurred in Vientiane, and the queen fled down the Mekong River with 3,000 of her subjects to the south.
