An island in the Bay of Biscay in western France. It is part of the Charente-Maritime department and consists of two districts. It has a population of about 10,000 and an area of 85 km2. It is 2.5 km away from La Rochelle on the opposite shore, and is connected by a bridge. It faces the Breton Channel to the north and the Antioche Channel to the south. It is elongated from the northwest to the southeast, with a length of 28 km and a width of 3 to 5 km. The terrain is generally flat, and in the southwest of the island there are straight sand dunes along the coastline, with little vegetation and little human intervention. However, the northeastern coast has many inlets. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
