It is believed to have spread to aristocratic society and temples and shrines in the Heian period through Chinese classics, and was widely used in the Middle Ages and early modern times as a term referring to new ceremonies, rules, and matters, as opposed to "old rituals" and "precedents." It is a term that broadly encompasses aspects, situations, and methods that were not seen before, and in the Middle Ages, merchants who emerged and began to act in opposition to the merchant organizations whose rights (privileges) had originally been recognized by the feudal lords were called "new ritual merchants." In addition, expressions such as "devising new rituals" and "creating new things" were seen as good things, as they meant "creating something new" through repeated ingenuity and innovation. For example, Emperor Godaigo's declaration during the Kenmu Restoration that "my new rituals should be a precedent for the future" (Baisho-ron) can be seen as an example of this.
