In archaeology, it refers to stone vessels made by professional stoneworkers, especially in Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece. In northern Mesopotamia, the custom of processing soft white stones such as marble and calcite to make vessels had existed since the Neolithic period, but by the time the Sumerian civilization was formed, artisans who specialized in making stone vessels appeared in cities. While vessels from the Halaf culture had no carvings on the outside, vessels decorated with reliefs and inlays appeared in the Uruk and Jamdat Nasr cultures, and from the Early Dynastic Period onwards, dark green lithite native to Baluchistan was chosen as the material and was processed into magnificent crafts.
