Yasugi Sadatoshi - Yasugi Sadatoshi

Russian linguist. Born in Tokyo, he graduated from the Department of Linguistics at the Faculty of Letters of Tokyo Imperial University in 1900 (Meiji 33). The following year, in 1901, he was ordered by the government to study Russian language in Russia, where he studied under Baudouin de Courtenay at the University of St. Petersburg. With the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War in 1904, he returned to Japan in a hurry. Thereafter, he devoted himself to Russian language education as a professor at the Tokyo School of Foreign Languages ​​(now Tokyo University of Foreign Studies), and developed his own systematic Russian language teaching method. In 1951 (Showa 26), he founded the Japan Russian Literary Society and became its first president, contributing to the development of Russian linguistics and literature research in Japan. His major works include the Iwanami Russian Dictionary (1960) and The Stairs of Russian Linguistics (first published in 1916), and his literary achievements in his younger days include The Poetic Master Pushkin (1906). He is also well versed in waka poetry, and has published a collection of poems titled Roshiya Sake (1965).

ロシア語学者。東京に生まれ、1900年（明治33）東京帝国大学文科大学言語学科を卒業。翌1901年ロシア語研究のため官命によりロシアに留学、ペテルブルグ大学でボードアン・ド・クルトネーに師事した。1904年日露戦争勃発(ぼっぱつ)に伴い、急遽(きゅうきょ)帰国。以後、東京外国語学校（現、東京外国語大学）教授としてロシア語教育に専念し、独自の体系的ロシア語教授法を編み出した。1951年（昭和26）日本ロシヤ文学会を創設して初代会長となり、日本におけるロシア語学・文学の研究の進展に貢献した。主著に『岩波ロシヤ語辞典』（1960）、『露西亜語学階梯(かいてい)』（初版1916）があり、若き日の文学的業績に『詩宗プーシキン』（1906）がある。また、歌道に通じ、歌集『ろしや酒』（1965）がある。
