Coal-bearing areas are scattered throughout the southern part of Niigata Prefecture and the northern part of Nagano Prefecture, collectively known as the Shinetsu Coalfield. There are several coal seams in the Neogene Uonuma Group, but they are all thin layers with a thickness of 0.40 to 0.60 m or less, and the coal is lignite. There are no coal mines currently in operation. [Ohashi Shusaku] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
