This method uses ultrasound to record the movement of various parts of the heart or the great blood vessels, and is also called UCG (short for ultrasound cardiography). Since it was first reported in 1954 by Sweden's C.M. Hertz (1920- ) and others, echocardiography has developed significantly and is now an indispensable method for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases. Ultrasound is sound with a frequency of 20,000 Hz or higher, and by utilizing two characteristics of ultrasound: (1) it travels in a straight line, and (2) it is reflected at the boundary between two media with different acoustic impedance, the shape and movement of the heart's valves, walls, membranes, and great blood vessels can be analyzed.

超音波を用いて心臓内各部あるいは大血管の運動を記録する方法で，UCG(ultrasound cardiographyの略)ともいわれる。1954年にスウェーデンのヘルツC.M.Hertz(1920‐　)らによって初めて報告されて以来，心エコー図法の発達は著しく，現在では循環器疾患の診断に欠くことのできない方法となっている。超音波とは周波数2万Hz以上の音であり，超音波のもつ，(1)直進性，(2)音響インピーダンスの異なる二つの媒質の境界面で反射される，という二つの特性を利用して，心臓の弁，壁，膜および大血管の形態と運動を分析することができる。
