… Under the Ottoman Empire, which lasted for about 500 years from the end of the 15th century, much of the Byzantine art was destroyed, and the traditions were preserved in some western monasteries, such as the Rila Monastery. However, with the exception of the frescoes of the Kremikovci Monastery from around 1500, the power of style was lost, and simple decorativeness was added, and icons became more artistic. The iconostases decorated with intricate woodcarvings originating from Mount Athos, which were produced mainly in Trjavna and Samokov from the end of the 18th century, represent the culmination of this trend. From the second half of the 18th century to 1878, there was a period of nationalist awakening known as the Bulgarian Renaissance, during which architectural and artistic activities flourished, both in churches and secular circles. …
