...The post-independence period refers to the period after Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, and modern history is usually characterized as beginning in 1910, when the Social Revolution began.
[Pre-Spanish period]
The first inhabitants of the Americas are thought to have migrated from the Asian continent across the Bering land bridge about 35,000 years ago, but the oldest traces of inhabitants discovered so far in Mexico (the Tlapacoya ruins, about 30 km southeast of Mexico City) are estimated to be about 21,000 years old. The Olmec culture, known as the mother of ancient Mexican civilizations, emerged in the lowlands along the Gulf of Mexico around 1200 BC.
