Born October 1, 1935 in Walton-on-Thames. British film, stage and musical actress. Real name Julia Elizabeth Wells. Her clear, beautiful four-octave voice and acting ability made her a musical star. She began singing in public at the age of 10, joining music hall shows performed by her mother, a pianist, and her stepfather, a singer. She made her debut as a solo singer in London in 1947. In 1954, she made her Broadway debut. In 1956, she played the lead role of Eliza in the musical classic My Fair Lady, which was highly praised. Although she missed out on the role when it was made into a film in 1964, she made her film debut in Walt Disney's Mary Poppins in the same year, winning an Academy Award for Best Actress. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as Maria, the governess, in The Sound of Music (1965). As traditional musical films began to decline in popularity in the late 1960s, she took on a wider range of roles, and in 1970, she was again in the spotlight as a supporting actress in the comedy Ten (1979), directed by Blake Edwards, whom she married in 1979. She was again nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Edwards' Victor/Victoria (1982). In 2000, she was made a Dame.

[Died] September 9, 1943, New Haven. American historian and educator. He was a professor at Bryn Mawr, Johns Hopkins, and Yale. He is known as an authority on the history and institutions of the American colonial period, and is a representative historian of the "Imperial School." His main works are "The Colonial Background of the American Revolution" (1924, 31) and "The Colonial Period of American History" (4 volumes, 34-38).

Andrews, Frank Maxwell

Born: February 3, 1884 in Nashville
Died: May 3, 1943. A United States Army officer in Iceland. Graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1906. Assigned to the newly established Army Air Corps in 1917, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel at the end of World War I. In 1935, he became the commander of the newly established Air Command. He stressed the importance of bombing in warfare, and contributed to the advancement of strategic bombing through the development of long-range bombers such as the Boeing B-17. He became a lieutenant general in 1941, and in 1943 he succeeded General Dwight Eisenhower as Commander-in-Chief of the United States Forces in Europe. He died in an airplane crash.

Died September 25, 1626. London. British theologian and Bishop of Winchester. He contributed to the establishment of theology in the Church of England. He was a learned man who spoke 15 languages. He was the head of the translation team for the King James Version of the Bible (1611), and was responsible for the Pentateuch and the historical books. The style of his Sermons was highly praised by T. S. Eliot.
