Grandfather of Yakamochi. During the Jinshin War (672), he sided with Prince Oama (later Emperor Tenmu) along with his relatives Fukiage and others. In the 13th year of Tenmu's reign (684), as Konishiki no Naka (equivalent to the fifth rank), he investigated the location of a new capital. In the 1st year of Shucho (686), as Naohiro no San, he went to Tsukushi to entertain envoys from Silla. He then delivered a eulogy on the affairs of the Treasury at the funeral of Emperor Tenmu, and delivered a eulogy again in the 2nd year of Jitō (688). In the 1st year of Taihō (701), he was promoted to Junior Third Rank under the Taihō Code, but his position as Chunagon was abolished by the same code. In the 2nd year, he became Shikibukyō, and in the 3rd year, he became councillor in the Imperial Court and was made Hyobukyō. In 705, he was appointed Dainagon and also held the position of Dazai no Sochi. There is an article about him being appointed Dainagon again in 708 with the rank of Shosanmi. In that same year, together with the leaders of the Dajokan, he received an imperial decree from Emperor Genmei ordering him to continue in his lineage and serve his descendants. In 7, he died as Dainagon and Taishogun with Shosanmi, and Emperor Genmei, who was deeply saddened by his death, bestowed him the rank of Junior Second Rank. His poems are included in the Manyoshu.
