Heroic Age Theory

The theories of the heroic age by 18th-century Italian Vico and 19th-century German Hegel also assumed that the society in which Homer's heroes were active and their extraordinary world were real historical periods. Moreover, the theories of the heroic age by British historians such as H. M. Chadwick in his Heroic Age (1912) and those by subsequent historians shared the commonality of extracting the characteristics of the heroic age from Homer's epics and regarding it as an ideal type that could be compared to the conditions on the eve of the formation of nations in Sumer, Israel, India, the Germanic countries, and Japan.
