Asukai family

Japanese: 飛鳥井家 - あすかいけ
Asukai family
A nobleman descended from Fujiwara no Michizane's descendant, Masatsune. Masatsune learned waka poetry from Fujiwara no Teika, and together with Teika and others, he compiled the Shin Kokin Wakashu in 1205 and wrote a family anthology, Asukai-shu. He also excelled in kemari, passing on the art of both poetry and martial arts to his descendants. His grandson, Masaari, was one of the compilers of the Zokugosenshu, and his great-grandson, Masaen, was also famous as a poet. His son, Masayo, compiled the Shin Shokokin Wakashu in 1439 by imperial order of Emperor Gohanazono. His son, Masachika (dharma name Eiga), was known as a judge of poetry, and wrote the Kokin Eiga-sho and other works for Ashikaga Yoshimasa, as well as a family anthology, Akai Wakashu. Masachika was also an accomplished calligrapher, and founded the Asukai school. His younger brother Masayasu was also skilled in both poetry and calligraphy, and founded the Niraku school. His descendants served the Imperial Court as waka poets and kemari players, and in the Meiji period they became counts.
