An enzyme involved in the replication of viral RNA. RNA viruses have RNA as the genetic body within their particles. The reaction in which this RNA molecule is replicated within an infected cell is carried out by a mechanism different from that of the replication of the host genome (DNA replication), and involves enzymes (or enzyme subunits) derived from the viral genome. The RNA replication process occurs by different mechanisms depending on whether the genetic RNA is single-stranded (e.g., influenza virus) or double-stranded (reovirus), and the enzymes involved are called by various names (e.g., RNA-dependent RNA polymerase).
