A type of roof. A typical roof style in Chinese and Japanese architecture. It is a gable roof style placed on top of a hipped roof style, with eaves on all four sides. Old examples in Japan can be seen in the Golden Hall and Tamamushi Shrine of Horyuji Temple. It is widely used in shrine and temple architecture, but is also seen in farmhouse architecture. 屋根の形式の一つ。中国および日本建築における代表的な屋根形式。寄棟造の上に切妻造を載せた形で,切妻造の四方に庇(ひさし)がついてできたもの。日本での古い例は,法隆寺の金堂や玉虫厨子などにみられる。社寺建築に広く採用されているが,農家建築にもみられる。
