An island in the western Indian Ocean. It is located about 560 km east-northeast of Mauritius. It is a volcanic island with a highest point of 396 m, and agriculture, livestock farming and fishing are practiced on it. It was discovered by Europeans at the end of the 16th century, and French Huguenots settled there at the end of the 17th century, but it became a British territory in 1814.
