Noirmoutier Island (English spelling)

Japanese: ノアールムーティエ[島](英語表記)Île de Noirmoutier
Noirmoutier Island (English spelling)
An island on the Atlantic coast of western France near the mouth of the Loire River. Area: 57 km2. Population: 8,229 (1975). Stretching from northwest to southeast, a toll bridge was completed in 1971 across the 800m strait between the southern end and the mainland, but the "Gore Passage", which appears at low tide, is still used for automobile traffic. The island was originally called Hell, and after a monastery was established there in 680, it came to be called Heli Monasterium, which was a corrupted version of the name. The remains of the monastery remain as a church, and the island is also famous for its mimosa viewing spot, the Bois de Chaise, and its castle.
