Italian painter. Born in the small village of Castagno. He is said to have produced a mosaic sketch in Venice when he was about 20 years old. He was active in Florence the rest of his career. His representative work, the mural painting for the Santa Polonia Monastery, The Last Supper (1447), is a work that expresses the figures' strong physiques and intense emotions with a crude and direct manner, using strong, almost carved lines. In contrast, the series of portraits of famous gentlemen and ladies (c. 1450), painted for the Carducci Villa, uses delicate use of light and shade to add a touch of sophistication to the previous crudeness.

イタリアの画家。小村カスターニョ生れ。20歳のころベネチアでモザイク下絵を制作したとされる。それ以外はフィレンツェで活動。代表作のサンタポロニア修道院の壁画《最後の晩餐》(1447)は，刻みこんだような強い描線で，人物の強靱な肉体と激しい感情を粗野なほど直截に表現した作品。それに対し，カルドゥッチ家別荘のために描かれた連作《著名紳士婦人たちの像》(1450ころ)では，繊細な明暗表現がかつての粗野なところに多少の洗練さを加えている。
