A former town in Gujo County, in the mid-west of Gifu Prefecture. It occupies the southwest of the Hida Highlands, in the upper reaches of the Nagara River, and its central settlement is a key transportation hub where the Shirakawa Highway (National Route 156) and Echizen Highway (National Route 158) split, and the Nagaragawa Railway runs through it. There are many lumber and woodworking factories. The northern part is part of Hakusan National Park. It is home to the Itoshiro Osugi cedar (a special natural monument), and ski resorts such as Aburazaka and Shiratori. In March 2004, it merged with the villages of Yawata, Yamato, Takasu, Minami, Myoho, and Wara in Gujo County to form Gujo City. 197.43 km2 . 岐阜県中西部,郡上(ぐじょう)郡の旧町。飛騨高地南西部,長良川の上流域を占め,中心集落は白川街道(国道156号線)と越前街道(国道158号線)が分かれる交通要地で,長良川鉄道が通じる。製材や木工の工場が多い。北部は白山(はくさん)国立公園に含まれる。石徹白(いとしろ)の大スギ(特別天然記念物)や,油坂,白鳥などのスキー場がある。2004年3月郡上郡八幡町,大和町,高鷲村,美並村,明宝村,和良村と合併し,郡上市となる。197.43km2。1万2864人(2003)。
