1882‐1944 French novelist, playwright, and diplomat. Born in Bellac in southwestern France, he was a brilliant student who consistently ranked first in his classes from elementary school to École Normale Supérieure. After a year as a French instructor at Harvard University, he was put in charge of the literary column of Le Matin in 1907, and published a poetic prose work, Les Country Women, two years later, which was highly praised by Gide. In 1910 he was appointed diplomat (and in his final years as Director of Intelligence), but was called up to serve in World War I and was wounded twice. In parallel with his diplomatic duties, he also devoted himself to writing, and began to seriously write novels around the time of his autobiographical novel, Les Pathétiques, in 1918.
