It is a vast plateau covering an area of 20,000 square kilometers, occupying the center of northern Korea. Topographically, it is a high semi-plain surrounded by the Bucheonryeong and Rangnim mountain ranges, with an average altitude of 1,200 meters. The southeastern part of the plateau is made up of the Pungseo Plateau, the Bucheon Plateau, and the Chosin Plateau, while the Hamgyong Mountains run from northeast to southwest on the eastern side. The western limit of the plateau is the Rangnim Mountains, which run almost north to south, and the Mateonryeong Mountains run south-southeast from Mount Baekdu (2,750 meters), the highest mountain in Korea. These plateaus have many steep peaks of 2,000 meters that form stepped flat surfaces due to river erosion and uplift. The Gaema Plateau has a cold climate in the central alpine region and a mild continental climate in the surrounding areas. It is also a low-precipitation region with an annual rainfall of less than 800 mm. The Hyocheon River, Bujeon River, and Changjin River, which originate from the Gaema Plateau, serve as the main artery of Korea's northeastern industrial region, generating hydroelectric power through a basin diversion system. In addition, timber production and processing are carried out, and agriculture is dominated by field crops such as cold-resistant wheat, potatoes, flax, and hops.
