British folk music, which had been handed down mainly in the Appalachian Mountains, came into contact with black music in the South, incorporating a sense of blues and the banjo, an instrument of African origin, and developed into modern folk music in the 1920s and 1930s with the spread of records and radio. In the very early days, it was difficult to draw a clear line between this and folk music, but after Mississippi-born Jimmie Rodgers recorded a sentimental song with guitar and vocals in 1927, which became popular, it rapidly grew into commercial music performed by professional singers.
