The ratio of job offers to job seekers. Its inverse is the job offer ratio. In the current Japanese labor statistics, two series are available: the new job offer ratio and the effective job offer ratio. The former is calculated from new reports of job offers and job seekers made in a month, while the latter is calculated from unfilled jobs within three months of the report. The two trends are basically the same, but the effective job offer ratio has less irregular fluctuations. The job offer ratio (1) is higher for young people by age, and (2) tends to rise during economic upswings when there is a tight demand for employees. These indicators are based on data obtained through public employment security offices, which differ from the trends of the entire country, and do not necessarily accurately reflect supply and demand due to inflated job offers and the relationship between employment insurance and job seekers, but they are important as labor supply and demand indicators in the current situation.

求職者に対する求人の比率。この逆が求職倍率である。現行の日本の労働統計では，新規求人倍率と有効求人倍率の2系列が利用可能である。前者は1ヵ月間に行われた求人，求職者数の新規届け出によって算出したものであるのに対し，後者は届け出後3ヵ月以内で未充足のものについて算出したものである。両者の動きは基本的には同一といえるが，有効求人倍率のほうが不規則変動は小さい。求人倍率は (1) 年齢別にみれば若年層のほうが高く，(2) 雇用者に対する需要の逼迫する景気上昇期に高まる傾向がある。これら指標は公共職業安定所を通して得られたデータをもとにしている点で，一国全体の動きとは異なること，また水増し求人や雇用保険と求職の関係などで必ずしも需給を正確に反映するとはかぎらないが，現状では労働の需給指標として重要なものである。
