It is an annual grass of the family Poaceae (APG classification: Poaceae). It is covered with soft hairs. The culm is erect, 30-80 cm tall, and the leaf is 3-6 mm wide. From May to July, the culm has a long, slender branch at the tip, and produces a slightly drooping panicle. The spikelet is flattened and oblong, 1.5-2.5 cm long, 5-8 mm wide, and contains several florets. The first and second glumes each have three or seven veins. The glumes are rough, and the awns emerge from between the two teeth at the top. The longest awns can be more than 9 mm long. It grows in fields and wastelands, and is widely distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and in the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere. The name comes from the fact that the spikelets resemble those of wild oat (also known as oat), which is also in the grass family, but are smaller and inedible.

イネ科（APG分類：イネ科）の一年草。全体に軟毛がある。稈(かん)は直立し、高さ30～80センチメートル、葉幅3～6ミリメートル。5～7月、稈の先端に細長い分枝があり、やや垂れ下がる円錐(えんすい)花序を出す。小穂は扁平(へんぺい)な長楕円(ちょうだえん)形で長さ1.5～2.5センチメートル、幅5～8ミリメートル、数個の小花がある。第1、第2包穎(ほうえい)には、それぞれ3または7脈がある。護穎はざらつき、上端の2歯間から芒(のぎ)が出る。芒は長いもので9ミリメートル以上になる。畑や荒れ地に生え、北海道から九州、および北半球の温帯に広く分布する。名は、小穂が、同じくイネ科のチャヒキグサ（別名カラスムギ）に似るが、より小さく、食用にならないことによる。
