Satsuma-Choshu Alliance - Satcho Ume

Satsuma-Choshu Alliance - Satcho Ume
This alliance between the Satsuma and Choshu clans was also called the Satsuma-Choshu Reconciliation Alliance. In August 1863, the Choshu clan lost control over the Imperial Court due to the Satsuma clan's argument for a unification of the Imperial Court and the Shogunate. The Choshu clan was bombarded by the Japanese fleet and attacked by the Shogunate's Choshu Expeditionary Forces, and surrendered. The lord of the clan and others were punished by the Imperial Court. However, as anti-Shogunate forces rose within the Satsuma clan and the Shogunate's plan to attack Satsuma and Choshu was leaked, the Satsuma and Choshu clans resolved their previous conflicts with the help of Ryoma Sakamoto, who was from the Tosa clan, and in January 1866, they made an agreement to cooperate in order to overthrow the Shogunate. The meeting was held at the Satsuma clan residence in Kyoto, where Komatsu Tatewaki and Saigo Takamori represented the Satsuma clan, and Katsura Kogoro (→Kido Takayoshi) represented the Choshu clan. Based on the offensive and defensive alliance that was formed at this time, the Choshu clan won the Second Bakufu-Choshu War.
