The Castle of Otranto

A novel by the English man of letters, H. Walpole. Published in 1764. It is considered the origin of English Gothic romance. In the preface, the author states that he aims to fuse an old story with the new novels of the 18th century. The story is set in the Middle Ages in Italy. The plot is that Manfred, the current head of the castle of Otranto, abdicates and surrenders the castle to the descendants of Alfonso, the rightful owner of the castle. The setting of the work, the bizarre and surreal events, and especially Manfred as a villain, all have qualities that became the prototype of later Gothic romances.

イギリスの文人H.ウォルポールの小説。1764年刊。イギリスのゴシック･ロマンスの元祖と考えられている作品。古い物語と18世紀の新しい小説との融合を目指すと作者は序文で述べている。物語の背景は中世で，場所はイタリア。現在のオトラント城の当主マンフレッドが正統な城主アルフォンゾーの子孫に位を譲って城を明け渡すという筋。作品の背景をなす道具立て，奇怪で超現実的な事件，とくに悪人としてのマンフレッドなどは，後のゴシック･ロマンスの原型となる特質を持っている。
