A general term for Indian treatises (shastras) on the visual arts (shilpa). It mainly focuses on architectural treatises (bhastushastras) and includes rules on the appearance of statues of various deities, paintings, sculptures, etc. In India, artistic activity is considered to be an imitation of the heavenly works created by the god of craftsmanship, Visvakarma, and treatises on art are considered to be divine rules written by gods or sages. The representative Hindu architectural treatise, Mānasara, was compiled in South India in the 6th to 7th centuries, and the North Indian Samarānganasūtradhara was written around the 11th century.
