Coughing refers to the phenomenon in which air from the lungs is reflexively expelled with a sound. It can be caused by various physical, chemical, or inflammatory stimuli of the upper respiratory tract. It can also be caused by irritation of the pleura, mediastinum, ears, esophagus, etc. The characteristics of coughs are diverse, and a wet cough is one that is accompanied by phlegm, while a dry cough is one that is not. The latter is mainly caused by extrapulmonary factors, while a wet cough occurs when there is secretion or exudate in the bronchi and lungs. The tone of the cough and the appearance of the attack vary depending on the illness. If a cough continues for 2 to 3 weeks, it may be a sign of a serious illness such as lung cancer, so it is necessary to consult a doctor.

咳 (せき) のこと。肺内の空気が音を伴って反射的に呼出される現象をいう。上気道に対する種々の物理的，化学的または炎症性刺激が原因となる。そのほか，胸膜，縦隔，耳，食道などの刺激によっても起りうる。咳の性状は多様であって，痰を伴うものを湿咳といい，伴わないものを乾咳という。後者は主として肺外性の原因で起ることが多く，これに対し湿咳は気管支および肺に分泌液や滲出液があるときに起る。咳の声調や発作の様相は，病気によって異なる。咳が2～3週間も続くときは，肺癌など重大な病気の前兆かもしれないから，医師に相談することが必要である。
