A structure in which a steel frame is encased in reinforced concrete is called steel framed reinforced concrete construction, and buildings constructed using this method are called steel framed reinforced concrete buildings or SRC buildings. There are two types: one in which the steel frame alone supports the load and the reinforced concrete is merely a covering, and the other in which the steel frame, rebar, and concrete all support the load together. The latter is a construction method that developed uniquely in Japan, a country prone to earthquakes, and in Japan this is what is usually meant when people talk about steel framed reinforced concrete buildings.

鉄骨の骨組みを鉄筋コンクリートで包んだ構造を鉄骨鉄筋コンクリート造steel framed reinforced concrete constructionと呼び，これによる建築を鉄骨鉄筋コンクリート造建築またはSRC造建築という。これには2種類あって，鉄骨の骨組みだけで荷重を支え，鉄筋コンクリートは単なる被覆である場合と，鉄骨，鉄筋，コンクリートの3者が一体となって荷重を支える場合とがある。後者はとくに，地震国日本で独自の発達をした構法で，日本で鉄骨鉄筋コンクリート造建築というときは，ふつうこれを指す。
