Honing - Honing (English spelling)

Honing is a processing method in which a grinding wheel and a workpiece are kept in constant surface contact with each other and two-dimensional motion is applied between them. It is often used to finish the inner surfaces of holes, but can also be used to finish external surfaces. Honing uses a tool called a hone, which is a grinding wheel attached to a radial holder. The processing oil used for honing is generally kerosene or diesel, and sulfur- or chlorine-based additives can also be added to improve cutting performance.

砥石(といし)と工作物とを一定の面接触状態に保ち、砥石と工作物との間に二次元的な運動を与えて行う加工方法で、とぎ上げともいう。穴の内面の仕上げに多く利用されるが、外表面の仕上げにも用いられる。ホーニングには、放射状の保持具に砥石を取り付けたホーンという工具が使われる。ホーニングの際に用いる加工油としては、一般に灯油または軽油が用いられ、切削性の向上のために硫黄(いおう)系や塩素系の添加剤を加えたものも使用されている。
