The Latin names of the three wise men, Gaspar (or Caspar), Balthazar (Balthasar), and Melchior, are said to date back to the sixth-century Latin Excerpt from the Gentiles (Excerpta latina barbari), and these names are written above the heads of the three wise men in a mosaic from the same century in the Church of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna. Since the early Middle Ages, Gaspar has been depicted as an old man, Balthasar as a middle-aged man, and Melchior as a young man, with a distinction made between their ages. …
