The administrative centre of the Korçë district in southeastern Albania. It is located in a basin at an altitude of 835m at the foot of the Morava mountain range. It is the country's main wheat-growing region, and sugar beet cultivation and processing is one of its main industries. There are also brewing, textile and leather factories. The town developed around an Islamic mosque built by a Muslim nobleman from the region in the 15th century, and later became a base for the national independence movement in southern Albania. It was occupied by Greece in 1912, and after four years of French rule, it was returned to Albania. During World War II, it was occupied by Italian, Greek and German troops, but was also the centre of the resistance movement against them. Population 64,100 (1989 estimate).
