…It was advocated by Stephen Fairbairn (1862-1938), who became a coach at Jesus College, Cambridge, in the 1920s and 1930s. He emphasized the movement of the blade and advocated rowing naturally and dynamically, which opposed the traditionalists who emphasized the style and form of the time. Karl Adam (1911- ) of Germany followed suit, adopting interval training and other techniques that emphasized sensation, and succeeded with a rowing style that did not move the upper body, losing only once in international competitions from 1958 to 1968. Then, from the 1959 European Championships, he started using a wider blade, which became known as the Macon blade after the name of the place where it was held, and became popular in other countries. …
