1886‐1940 Austrian psychiatrist. He studied at the University of Vienna and was strongly interested in philosophy. While he was influenced by Husserl and S. Freud, he also studied organic diseases and attempted to combine neurology and psychiatry. He became known internationally for his description of generalized periaxonal encephalitis (Schilder's disease). His achievements are diverse, including phenomenological and psychoanalytic research on organic diseases such as progressive paralysis and psychiatric illnesses such as schizophrenia, as well as unexplored areas of neurology and psychology in Medical Psychology (1913), a phenomenological study of depersonalization in Self-Consciousness and Personality Consciousness (1918), and Images and Phenomena of the Human Body (1935), which investigated the role of the body image.
