EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid)

It is one of the polyunsaturated fatty acids that make up the lipids specific to marine organisms, and is particularly abundant in sardines and mackerel. It is known for its physiological effect of lowering blood pressure and blood lipid levels, and is used as a medicine to improve symptoms caused by arteriosclerosis and hyperlipidemia, as well as being effective in preventing high blood pressure, inflammation, and the proliferation of cancer cells. 水産生物に特有な脂質を構成する高度不飽和脂肪酸の一つで、いわしやさばなどに特に豊富に含まれる。生理作用として血圧や血中脂質濃度の低下作用が知られ、動脈硬化症による症状や高脂血症の改善を目的とした医薬品として実用化されているほか、高血圧、炎症の予防や癌細胞の増殖防止などに効果があるとされている。
