It is one of the polyunsaturated fatty acids that make up the lipids specific to marine organisms, and is particularly abundant in sardines and mackerel. It is known for its physiological effect of lowering blood pressure and blood lipid levels, and is used as a medicine to improve symptoms caused by arteriosclerosis and hyperlipidemia, as well as being effective in preventing high blood pressure, inflammation, and the proliferation of cancer cells.
